  1. 1. Soak the breadcrumbs in the milk. Mix them with the ground meat, the egg, and a pinch of salt to form a uniform mixture.
  2. 2. Form 16 equal-sized meatballs from the meat mixture. Heat the olive oil in a large pan and fry the meatballs until browned all over. Remove them.
  3. 3. Chop the onion and garlic finely. Sweat them in the meatball fat until soft.
  4. 4. Add the canned tomatoes and dried basil. Crush the tomatoes slightly with a spoon. Stir in the sugar.
  5. 5. Place the fried meatballs back into the sauce. Let them cook for 10 minutes at medium heat. Remove them carefully.
  6. 6. Boil the penne pasta in salted water until al dente. Reserve 150 ml of cooking water.
  7. 7. Mix the pasta with the tomato sauce. Add the cooking water to bind the sauce. Serve the meatballs on top of the pasta.
