🍽️ The Ultimate Sauerkraut

Ingredients
- 500 g sauerkraut
- 2 tbsp broth powder
- 2 onion(s)
- 250 g bacon, streaky (diced)
- 2 tbsp lard
- sugar
- optional pineapple juice
- salt and pepper
Instructions
- 1. Heat the lard in a large pot or casserole dish on the stove.
- 2. Remove the pot from the heat to let it cool slightly.
- 3. Add the sauerkraut, finely diced onions, and the dissolved vegetable broth to the pot.
- 4. Add the bacon cubes and the sugar.
- 5. Pour in some water and optionally some pineapple juice.
- 6. Stir all ingredients well.
- 7. Place the pot back on the stove.
- 8. Simmer the kraut over medium heat for about 30 minutes.
- 9. Stir the kraut occasionally while it simmers.
- 10. Place the pot in the preheated oven at 175 degrees Celsius with top and bottom heat.
- 11. Let the kraut cook in the oven for another 20 to 30 minutes.
- 12. Stir the kraut repeatedly during the cooking time.
- 13. Pour in more water if necessary to prevent the kraut from drying out.
- 14. Remove the kraut from the oven when it has taken on a nice brown color.
- 15. Season the finished sauerkraut to taste with pepper, salt, and a little sugar.
- 16. Serve the dish with jowl, pork knuckle, bratwurst, mashed potatoes, or liver sausage.
