  1. 1. Squeeze the sausage meat out of the casing and form small balls with slightly damp hands. Heat olive oil in a large pan and fry the meatballs all around over medium heat.
  2. 2. Finely dice the onions and add them to the pan along with fennel seeds. Press in the garlic and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture loses its color.
  3. 3. Add the tomato pieces, season with salt and pepper, and let the sauce simmer for about 20 minutes over low to medium heat.
  4. 4. Pluck the basil leaves from the stems, chop them roughly, and sprinkle them over the finished sauce.
