  1. 1. Thoroughly wash the oranges and lemons under hot water.
  2. 2. Slice the fruits into thin rounds.
  3. 3. Place the fruit slices, spices, and wine in a pot.
  4. 4. Heat the mixture until it is just about to boil.
  5. 5. Place the pot on a small burner (rechaud) to keep the punch warm.
  6. 6. Use tongs or a rack to place the sugar loaf over the pot rim.
  7. 7. Soak the sugar loaf generously with rum.
  8. 8. Light the rum on the sugar loaf on fire.
  9. 9. Let the rum burn until all the sugar has melted and dripped into the wine.
  10. 10. Enjoy the punch best while it is still hot.
  11. 11. Caution: Make sure you prepare the punch in a well-ventilated room to avoid fire hazards!
