  1. 1. Cut the onions into large chunks.
  2. 2. Place the onions in a pot and add a small splash of water.
  3. 3. Sauté the onions over medium heat until they are soft.
  4. 4. Press the garlic directly into the pot.
  5. 5. Stir all the spices into the onion mixture.
  6. 6. Let the spices toast for about thirty seconds.
  7. 7. Add a little more water if necessary to prevent burning.
  8. 8. Add the chili flakes to your taste (we recommend at least a quarter teaspoon).
  9. 9. Add the red lentils to the pot.
  10. 10. Sauté the lentils for about thirty seconds.
  11. 11. Add the tomatoes, coconut milk, and the remaining water to the pot.
  12. 12. Stir the ingredients well.
  13. 13. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  14. 14. Reduce the heat to medium and let the dal simmer for ten to fifteen minutes.
  15. 15. Check the consistency of the lentils and continue cooking until they are creamy.
  16. 16. Season the dal to taste with salt and pepper.
  17. 17. Serve the dal with rice, flatbread, as a dip, or as a side dish for vegetables.
  18. 18. Tip: Instead of water, you can sauté the onions and spices with a little cooking oil.
  19. 19. For a fresh touch, mix yogurt, olive oil, salt, and mint into a dip.
  20. 20. Garnish the dish with the mint yogurt and serve it with naan bread.
