- 250 ml coconut milk
- 1 can tomatoes, chunky (approx. 400 g)
- 200 ml water
- to taste salt and pepper
Instructions
- 1. Cut the onions into large chunks.
- 2. Place the onions in a pot and add a small splash of water.
- 3. Sauté the onions over medium heat until they are soft.
- 4. Press the garlic directly into the pot.
- 5. Stir all the spices into the onion mixture.
- 6. Let the spices toast for about thirty seconds.
- 7. Add a little more water if necessary to prevent burning.
- 8. Add the chili flakes to your taste (we recommend at least a quarter teaspoon).
- 9. Add the red lentils to the pot.
- 10. Sauté the lentils for about thirty seconds.
- 11. Add the tomatoes, coconut milk, and the remaining water to the pot.
- 12. Stir the ingredients well.
- 13. Bring the mixture to a boil.
- 14. Reduce the heat to medium and let the dal simmer for ten to fifteen minutes.
- 15. Check the consistency of the lentils and continue cooking until they are creamy.
- 16. Season the dal to taste with salt and pepper.
- 17. Serve the dal with rice, flatbread, as a dip, or as a side dish for vegetables.
- 18. Tip: Instead of water, you can sauté the onions and spices with a little cooking oil.
- 19. For a fresh touch, mix yogurt, olive oil, salt, and mint into a dip.
- 20. Garnish the dish with the mint yogurt and serve it with naan bread.
