  1. 1. Dice the onions and garlic into small cubes.
  2. 2. Heat oil in a large pan or pot.
  3. 3. Fry the onions and garlic in the hot oil for 5 minutes until soft.
  4. 4. Add the finely chopped chili peppers (including seeds), cumin, and chili powder.
  5. 5. Sauté the spices and vegetables for another 2 minutes.
  6. 6. Add the ground beef.
  7. 7. Fry the meat over high heat until it breaks into small crumbles.
  8. 8. Stir in the canned tomatoes and the cinnamon stick.
  9. 9. Season the mixture generously with salt and pepper.
  10. 10. Let the mixture simmer on medium heat for 90 minutes.
  11. 11. Stir the chili occasionally.
  12. 12. Add the beans 30 minutes before the end of the cooking time.
  13. 13. Taste the chili at the end and add Sambal Oelek if you prefer it spicier.
  14. 14. Serve the chili con carne with white bread and a dollop of plain yogurt or guacamole.
  15. 15. It tastes even better if you prepare the chili con carne the day before.
